The Spiral One Day Peace Challenge 2006

In September, we ran a project to support the Internation Day of Peace. The United Nations General Assembly designated the 21st of September as the International Day of Peace, a day of cease-fire and peace-building activities to be celebrated around the world.

Spiraluniverse ran a poetry competition and the winning poem was used as the basis for a Peace Movie which was circulated globally on the International day of Peace. A full report on the project including featured poems will be available soon.

Watch the Peace Movie.

Hope of a Better Future - Winning poem,  Poetry for Peace Competition 2006

By Hubert Hutchinson, London

Is it too much to hope for a better future?

The promise of a world in equilibrium, at one with nature

To see the restoration of order in the universe

To witness the downward spiral of mankind set in reverse

Is it too much to dream of a world where there is no war or strife?

A place where nations may salute each other and celebrate the beauty of life

A world where all humankind can join hands together in love, peace and unity Where peoples of the world can all share a common hope aim and destiny

Is it too much to dream of a world without injustice and oppression?

But one in which there is freedom of choice, speech and expression

Where one person's freedom will not encroach upon another

A world without a single social, creedal or racial border

Is it too much to hope for a better future?

Where life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are beyond a caricature

But where these inalienable rights are seen to be self-evident

To live in a world where these truths are consistent and resplendent

Is it too much to hope for a better future?'
